The Thomas County Public Library System has received a grant from the Georgia Department of Highway Safety to purchase computers to be used by teenagers in conjunction with Joshua's Law. The grant funds have been used to purchase 12 computers which will be reserved for students who are completing a 30-hour online course to fulfill the driver education requirement.
There are two computers reserved for this purpose at each TCPLS location. The computers will be designated exclusively for use by teens working on a driver education course from 3:00-6:00pm, Monday through Friday.
Joshua's Law, which went in effect January 1, 2007, requires that all 16-year-olds in Georgia complete an approved driver-education course and complete 40 hours of supervised driving prior to receiving a Class-D driver's license. The online version of the course is offered by a number of private companies, which are listed on the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) website. Fees vary depending on the provider.
Teens who do not wish to take the course online do have another option. They may choose to take 30 hours of classroom instruction from a school approved by the DDS. The traditional driver training courses approved by DDS are currently offered by many high schools and private driving schools.
