The Thomas County Public Library is proud of its initiative, in cooperation with The Jack Hadley Black History Museum and the Thomasville Genealogy History and Fine Arts Library, to archive and index a Collection of African-American Obituaries. This collection provides individuals with vital connections in genealogical research. This is an ongoing project that began in 2009 with over 3,800 obituaries scanned and indexed. This database is the latest step by the Virginia Historical Society to increase access to its varied collections relating to Virginians of African descent. Since its founding in 1831, the VHS has collected unpublished manuscripts, a collection that now numbers more than 8 million processed items.
At the Library
Our Heritage Room houses a collection of Genealogy and Local History resources. Books are available on local family histories; county histories with an emphasis on Thomas County; general genealogy subjects and on southeastern states; periodicals; local high school year books city directories from 1946 and a lateral file collection containing local history are available.
A state of the art Microfilm reader/printer is available to view. County census and Thomasville newspapers from 1861-2009; 2010 partial, with hard copies available from 2010 to present.
The Georgia Death Index from 1919-1998 is also available as well as databases for censuses and other genealogical records. There are 2 dedicated computers with printer and genealogy software installed and free access to subscription on-line services and copier are also available.
TCPLS is also a Family Search Affiliate Library, which provides access to a collection of over 700,000 microfiche genealogical records available for rent and viewable here in the library.
The South Georgia Genealogical Society also meets at the library the 2nd Saturday of each month at 10:30 am.
TCPLS patrons may also access the genealogical database, Heritage Quest, from their home computers through GALILEO. Patrons who have already set up their online PINES account may access GALILEO through PINES by clicking on the GALILEO link at the bottom of the screen once they have signed in. If you have not set up your online PINES account you will need a password to access it and may acquire the current one by either visiting or calling your local Thomas County Public Library.
